Jersey City Theater Center Circles is a series built along the model of a Songwriters Circle in which 2-3 artists take turns performing their songs while the others accompany. Here, not only will Jersey City's best artists do as much, but throughout the evening they will take questions and discuss the nature of songwriting, the various practices and methods they employ, and what particular stories they can share about their own work.

Shayfer James:
Shayfer James weaves surprisingly genuine musical landscapes that evoke the gauzy, sweaty sexuality of gulf-coast barrooms and the fantastical, narcotic mysticism of a Lewis Carroll-inspired three-ring circus. Mr. James' noir-infused, piano driven music swaggers from dark danceable anthems to harrowing ballads with jazz lilted satire and whiskey-dirt grit. Raised with one foot in the theater and the other in a dingy night club, Shayfer finds inspiration as frequently in Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim as he does in The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, The Pogues, and The White Stripes.

Carolyn Light:
Jersey City based singer/songwriter Carolyn Light is known for her ability to stop a room. With her clear, haunting vocals, her traditionally inspired melodies, and her poetic lyrics, Carolyn’s music seems timeless.
Raised in Colorado Springs, Carolyn showed a talent for singing at a young age. By the time she was 9, she had started vocal training in liturgical, musical theatre, and operatic styles of singing. At the age of 17, she sang at Carnegie Hall as a soprano for the National Youth Choir. She went on to attend college at Binghamton University. In 2007, she transferred to SUNY Purchase to pursue acting and theatre. She moved to Jersey City after graduating in 2009, and has lived there ever since. She began singing at open mics in the area, and soon found herself performing for festivals, concerts, and local venues in both Jersey City and Manhattan.

Gary Van Miert
Gary Van Miert is the lead singer/rhythm guitarist and sole songwriter of “The Sensational Country Blues Wonders!” - a band that has it’s own unique interpretation of traditional American music - classic Country tunes from the fifties and sixties, down home spiritual songs from the Golden Age of Gospel, and time-honored Blues numbers that go back to the greats hailing from Mississippi and Chicago. The Jersey Journal called The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! "One of the best throwback blues groups on any side of the Hudson.”
